From March 7-9, Shawn Richison and I were manning a table at the Toronto Comic Con. We met lots of cool people, saw some terrific costumes, and shared some of the stuff we've been working on.

Post Con wrap-up

Holmes, Inc. launch bash!!

On Friday July 22, 2011, all of the participants in Holmes, Inc. volume 2 gathered together at the new home of the Toronto Cartoonists' Workshop to celebrate the release of the book.

It was an awesome evening...lots of comics talk and "ooohing" and "ahhhing" at the pages of original art lovingly displayed.

Wizard Con Interview

It was a great show. I was sharing table space with my good friend, Paul Quinn. Great crowd, great guests, great weekend!

Here's a sneak peek at OUTCAST, the new project that Sami Kivela (Hollow Victory, The Shot Heard 'Round The Worlds) and I are working on.



I wrote the script a couple of years ago, and I showed it to Sami after our two anthology stories were completed. He was gracious enough to bring my words to life with his talented pencil and smooth storytelling skills. He did a beautiful job of creating a realistic, detailed look for the characters and the world they inhabit.

And also a nod to Ed Brisson, for laying down the letters. This is the third project the three of us have worked on together. Six pages are complete, and I'm thrilled with the results.

Darwyn

I went to Darwyn Cooke's storytelling workshop today at the Gladstone.



I had a great time. He gave a very thorough and entertaining presentation on his storytelling process. Among my favourite pieces of wisdom were...

*The importance of relating all aspects of your script back to the central theme.
*Character can be expressed through physicality (posture, clothing, expressions, etc.). Dialouge and captions may not even be needed to describe your character's...er, character.
*Redundant narrative is the kiss of death.
*Ideally, good dialogue should advance the plot and reveal character.
*The artist does the work of an entire film crew (casting, lighting, set design, wardrobe, etc.).

The highlight of the day was listening to Mr. Cooke read chapter one from THE HUNTER and scroll through the illustrated pages on a Power Point screen. It was a great insight into the storytelling process and the choices he made.



I even got a couple of my books prettied up.
